On a Roll....

Wow, I have been using up my scrap and yardage stash for the last 6 weeks and still cant see a dent in it--I am very grateful to be able to get back to my "Happy Place" sewing and quilting.

I started this quilt Feb. 16th and finished up the last of these 7 quilts March 29th. 

Six of these have been boxed up and sent to their destinations.

It just takes one yard of focus fabric and then I just "shopped" in my stash for coordinating fabrics for the other strips. 

Construction themed fabric was fun to use.

This quilt top was 47 x 54 so I just used a length of grey, split and pieced with 8 inches of orange.  I love it when I can economize backings by piecing them.

Another Little Project...

I have been working on this in between quilts. It was in a bag of donated fabrics I received several years ago. Just one lonely block, hand stitched, stained and in bad shape.

 I soaked it in the sink with Oxyclean and it cleaned up nicely.

Then, I trimmed off the worst of the edges...

...trying to preserve as much of the points as I could.

I drew a 9.5 inch square on a piece of muslin and ironed it nice and flat and square on my ironing board.  While the quilt block was still wet, I stretched, nudged and pinned it to fit.  Here it is pinned to my ironing board to dry.

After it was dry, and before I took the pins out, I starched and steamed it with my iron to coax it into shape. The perimeter is nice and square, but the center will always be skewed a bit.

Quilted it to a piece of muslin with a scrap of Hobbs 80/20.

I had a hard time finding a 9 inch square frame.  I ordered this from Amazon and I didn't have much choice of color or style in this size. I am framing a few more old quilt blocks and will then decide if I keep it black or paint them and give them a rustic finish.

I think the tilted center gives it a bit of charm.

For now, I stuck it in this little vignette. But, I have other plans for this and other's like in the near future.  I will share when I get that project done this spring.

H2H Twins!

As you might have read in my last post,

 I was working on a plan for these scraps left over from this 2009 quilt.

It started with a simple 9 patch and an alternating block with a colored center, the farther I went the more I disliked it...I tried to like it, but I just couldn't.

I pulled out all the alternate blocks and stuck them to the side on my flannel design wall.  I added solid neutral blocks between the 9 patches.

Hmmmm....Look what I started to see.

And then it needed a separation border.

I really liked this!

By the way,

I whipped out forty 9-patch blocks and my quilt was approaching queen sized.

Hands 2 Help 2018 Quilt Challenge

So, I spent some time with my calculator and determined I had just enough yellow for borders for 2 quilts!

Don't you just love this fabric!

I made this 60 x 60 quilt....

...and this 54 x 54 quilt.

Yes, I squeezed out 2 quilts from these scraps by adding 2 yards of this complimentary neutral.

Nothing left but some shavings and a couple of strips.

Hands 2 Help 2018

It's been a couple of years since I took part in the

 Hands 2 Help Quilt Challenge

I am excited to say that I have already started a scrappy (did I say scrappy?) quilt for the challenge.

I made this lap quilt for a little cousin back in 2009 while she in treatment for breast cancer at age 24.  I had some fabric left and have always wanted to use it for a smaller scrap quilt.  But until now, I didn't have an inspiration for how to make it work.

I went through all the scraps and decided that a 2.5 inch block/strip would be the vest way to utilize the fabric with the least waste.  I then decided to make a simple 9 patch with an alternating block.

 Here is what I came up with...

As you an see from the original pattern, there were lots of small strips and sashings.  I had a number of 1.5 inch strips.  I even sewed these together and got a couple of 2.5" blocks from each strip. 

You can hardly tell they are pieced.

I did have to purchase a couple of yards of neutral for the background.  I had plenty of white, or beige, or grey....but nothing that would compliment this fabric line.

Look at these nice pieces left for my borders.

I won't know how big this quilt will be until I run out of 2.5" blocks and figure out how much border fabric I can use.

 I am excited to be part of the Hands 2 Help 2018 Challenge.

This is Sarah's 8th year to organize the Hands 2 Help Challenge. There are 3 charities involved this year, 2 in the US and one in Canada.

I'm going to make at least one quilt for the Little Lambs Foundation for Kids and at least one for Quilty Hugs for Happy Chemo.
